Do you ever find that you've forgotten to breathe? No? Just me? For something so basic, so crucial to survival, I'm surprisingly bad at breathing.
Deep breathing?? Only possible when I consciously work at it or if I'm trying to calm myself down.
The beauty of breath prayer is that it's simple and surprisingly soothing. Experts have written about the physiological and mental health benefits of breathing, but I'm convinced having practiced it.
I consider the Inhale a form of Palm Up prayer: a short phrase that reminds you of Truth or that is what you want to receive from God. I like the phrase, "God is enough."
The Exhale is the Palm Down prayer: another short phrase about what you are choosing to let go. After "God is enough," it could be "So I don't have to be afraid" or "So I don't have to be anxious." It could be anything that you struggle with: control, striving, worry, etc.
Choose your phrases and try a few breaths right now. Closing your eyes helps and breath in and out deeply, from your belly. Be nourished that you took time to breathe.
