the joy of making things

It's taken me far too long to realise that I am a creator of things. It's simple, really, because we all are. Made in God's image, we are meant to create.

To take a formerly used item and to re-envision it's use.

To put in time rather than money to have something new.

To add personal touches to make things special.

I've found that when I make something, it helps me to "do something daily that doesn't compute" - a Wendell Berry-ism. Yes, dollar for dollar, it's more "efficient" to work a job for money and buy the item that takes hours to make. But the many unseen effects on the environment, other humans and creatures makes it too expensive for me.

Making things literally puts my hands to use and, I daresay, there's something spiritual about the act of creating.
